Corian Reception Desk Build Part 2: From Hospital Wards to Shop Floors

After completing the hospital reception desk featured in Part 1, we thought we’d earned a breather but fate (and Ideal Surfaces) had other ideas! No sooner had the dust settled than our friends at Ideal got in touch with another project. This time, it wasn’t for a hospital but for a retail environment, and once again, Corian and angles were at the heart of the design.

Armed with everything we’d learned from the previous build and a few new tricks up our sleeves, we were asked to produce the core structure of a shop counter, ready for Ideal to clad in Corian. The brief? Let’s just say it was open to interpretation. Drawings were vague, but we were given carte blanche on the design, as long as it looked like the render, we were good to go.

This counter was a peninsular style in a rectangle with angled overhangs which protrude over an angled lower section. This overhang allowed for the inclusion of vivid cyan LED’s and CNC cut lettering with the name of the venue; these would be backlit with the vivid cyan LED.

Working from the floorplate rib, the lads built upwards, carefully forming the various angles as they went. With plenty of perseverance, and a bit of head scratching they achieved the complex shape that had been envisioned. Further challenges arose when it came to integrating the LED light boxes, but once again, persistence and experience saw it through.

With the main structure complete, the team could move on to the interior cupboards. Using the same setting-out rod method as the hospital desk build, they crafted a series of cupboards and drawers in contrasting black and white, creating a bold, striking finish.

Throughout the build, we worked closely with Ideal Surfaces to ensure every detail aligned. This collaboration was crucial, as Ideal would be handling the Corian cladding and LED installation independently. Once our part of the manufacture was complete, the unit was transported to their factory, where they worked their magic wrapping it in Corian, fitting the LEDs, and finally, bringing it all together on site.

The end result? A stunning, one-of-a-kind installation that combines precision joinery with seamless solid surface craftsmanship. It’s a perfect example of what can be achieved when skill, teamwork, and attention to detail come together and a project we’re genuinely proud to have been part of.

If you’re considering a project that involves solid surface work, whether it’s a bespoke desk, counter, or reception feature, we can carry out the full process in-house or collaborate with our trusted partners at Ideal Surfaces. Over the years, we’ve built a strong working relationship with their team, ensuring every project benefits from the very best in design, manufacture, and finish,  from concept right through to installation.
