John F White Cabinetmakers Ltd recently manufactured and installed bespoke reception furniture and screens at Sutton Cottage Hospital, working for E Manton Ltd.
This project presented an interesting challenge, with the new reception furniture needing to integrate into an existing area made up of multiple walls, columns, openings, bulkheads and roller shutters. Rather than simply manufacturing a standalone reception desk, the furniture had to become part of the existing building and neatly bring the different elements together.
The scheme incorporated two reception positions with bespoke counters, glazed screens and solid American White Oak frames. A combination of Egger Misty Blue and Reed Green finishes was used alongside Polyrey Orme D’Autrefois counter fronts, Egger Chromix Silver worktops and brushed aluminium plinths. The screens incorporated 10mm toughened glass with speech holes to create practical reception points suitable for the healthcare environment.
A significant part of the project involved producing new panels to clad the existing walls and conceal services while fitting neatly around the surrounding architecture and up to the roller shutters. Due to the complexity of the existing structure, many of these components could not simply be manufactured to finished sizes in our workshop. Instead, they were deliberately produced to allow our installation team to cut, adapt and fit them accurately on site once the final walls and bulkheads could be measured. This requirement was identified within our working drawings before manufacture.
The completed installation demonstrates what can be achieved when bespoke furniture needs to work around the realities of an existing building, particularly within refurbishment projects where walls, services and existing features cannot always be altered to suit the furniture.
