As part of the fit-out works at Woodlands Lodge, John F. White Ltd Cabinetmakers were appointed to manufacture and supply a small but highly detailed package of bespoke furniture for the reception and communal areas. All designed by the talented team at HomeSmiths Ltd (homesmiths.co.uk) The brief focused on creating furniture that felt welcoming, robust and in keeping with a premium care-home environment, while also meeting practical and accessibility requirements.
Scope of Works
The project comprised the manufacture of:
- Two bespoke bookcases
- Two bespoke magazine racks
- One feature reception desk
Each item was produced in-house to suit the specific layout, finishes and operational needs of the building.
Feature Bookcases
The bookcases were designed as architectural furniture pieces. The units incorporated a central fireplace opening, flanked by full-height shelving and pilastered details. Traditional mouldings were used to add depth and character, helping the furniture sit comfortably within a residential-style interior rather than a clinical setting.
The units were manufactured in Egger Came Beige, with carefully proportioned shelves, decorative cornice mouldings and integrated warm white LED lighting to the pilasters, providing subtle accent lighting and visual warmth. Hardware was selected for durability and ease of use, ensuring the furniture would stand up to daily use in a busy care environment
Magazine Racks
The magazine racks were designed as a feature to be situated at the end of the corridors allowing the residents to have full access to reading literature on offer, using a contrasting timber material these units provide organised, easily accessible storage for reading material in communal areas, helping to keep spaces tidy while encouraging residents and visitors to engage with the environment.
Reception Desk
The bespoke reception desk was designed around both staff workflow and accessibility. The layout includes stepped heights to accommodate standing staff positions and a lowered section to comply with DDA requirements, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.
Materials were carefully chosen to create contrast and visual interest, combining Egger Beige Textile worktops with Egger Tobacco Pacific Walnut for the fascia panels and storage units. Integrated storage, concealed cable management and brushed aluminium outlets were incorporated to keep the reception area clean and clutter-free. Soft-close hinges and warm white LED lighting further enhance the quality and usability of the desk
The Result
The completed furniture provides Woodlands Lodge with a reception and communal area that feels calm, welcoming and well-considered. Every element was tailored to the building and its users, balancing aesthetics, durability and functionality.
This project is a good example of our approach to care-sector furniture: Quality materials and precise manufacture, delivered to suit both the space and the people who use it.
