John F. White Ltd Cabinetmakers were delighted to be involved in a unique and sustainable feature installation at the brand-new Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston-on-Stour, where heritage materials from the former hospital building were given a new lease of life.
As part of the project, we were tasked with re-purposing four original rainwater hoppers salvaged from the old Ellen Badger Hospital. These striking cast iron elements were carefully restored through sand blasting and powder coating, bringing them back to pristine condition while preserving their historic character.
To transform the hoppers into a functional and eye-catching centrepiece, we designed a bespoke steel framework to support them, topped with a solid sapele hardwood surface. The warm tones of the timber contrast beautifully with the industrial finish of the metalwork, creating a feature that feels both contemporary and rooted in the building’s past.
Alongside this, we also designed and coordinated the manufacture of matching benches, combining galvanised and powder coated steel leg frames with solid sapele hardwood tops to provide durable, comfortable seating that complements the main installation.
All items were carefully delivered to site and fully assembled in position by our installation team, creating a striking and unique centrepiece for the hospital’s entrance courtyard, positioned on the patio area directly outside the main doors.
Projects like this perfectly showcase our ability to blend craftsmanship, design development and practical problem-solving, working with a mix of reclaimed elements and new materials to create something distinctive, purposeful and built to last.
We are proud to have played a small part in carrying forward the story of the Ellen Badger Hospital into its next chapter. This installation follows on from our earlier work at the hospital, where we designed and manufactured the new reception counters—another project focused on blending functionality, craftsmanship and thoughtful design within the building. Together, these elements help create a welcoming and cohesive first impression for patients, visitors and staff alike.
